Before the Appointment

A few things make the signing go much smoother.

  • Have an acceptable, current government-issued photo ID available.
  • Bring the blank document (an extra copy “just in case”) and any other required attachments.
  • Do not sign ahead of time when the signature must be witnessed by the notary.
  • Witnesses: Confirm the number and qualifications required with the document preparer or receiving agency. Providing your own qualified witness(es) is preferred. If you cannot provide one, ask about witness availability when scheduling. One witness may be available by advance arrangement for +$25, subject to availability and the document's requirements.
  • If you are unsure which notarial act is required, ask the document preparer or receiving agency before the appointment.
